What you should do before you get pregnant

What you should do before you get pregnant

  • Think about the lifestyle that might affect your ability to get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy.
    • This applies to men too.
    • You are more likely to get pregnant if you are both in good health.
  • If you smoke, get advice about stopping and quit it before you become pregnant.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • You should avoid any type of alcohol if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
  • Take exercise and avoid sedentary life style
  • If you or your partner takes any medication, talk to your doctor before you try to get pregnant.
  • Take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily at least for three months
  • If you already have a baby with spina bifida, or if you have coeliac disease, diabetes, are obese or take anti-epileptic medicines, ask your doctor for more advice. You will need to take a bigger dose of folic acid that requires a prescription.
  • If you have a health condition, for example mental health problems, congenital heart diseases or a family history of any inherited diseases, talk to your doctor before you try to get pregnant
  • Get appropriate treatment if you have communicable disease like syphilis before you conceive
